Valentin Vancak

Research statistician (a.k.a. Data scientist) & lecturer

2023 -          Lecturer (Assistant Professor)

2021 - 2023 Postdoc in Statistics

2014 - 2020 Ph.D. in Statistics

2010 - 2013  M.A in Mathematical Statistics

2007 - 2010 B.A. in Statistics and Economics

I am a tenure-track lecturer (equiv. to assistant professor) in the Department of Data Science at the Holon Institute of Technology (HIT). Before joining HIT, I was a postdoctoral researcher focusing on causal inference; I worked with Prof. Arvid Sjölander from the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. Our first research article, on sensitivity analysis of G-estimators, was published in Statistics in Medicine, and the second article, on the application of the G-estimation method to the estimation of the Number Needed to be Exposed (NNE) in observational studies, is currently under review (the preprint is available on arXiv).

Before joining MEB, I obtained a Ph.D. from the Dept. of Statistics at the University of Haifa, Israel. My research was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Y. Goldberg from the Technion and Prof. S.Z. Levine, from the University of Haifa. The research focused on the analysis of the NNT efficacy index. The outputs of this research include, inter alia, an R package, and a web application. For the theoretical analysis of the NNT, please look at this research paper; for an intuitive explanation with a web application user guide, please refer to that article. For the concluding paper, I'd like you to take a look at this article.

Before starting a Ph.D. I graduated with a cum laude B.A. in Statistics and Economics and, consequently cum laude master's degree in Statistics, where I conducted research in mathematical statistics.

Since 2010 I have served as a lecturer and a T.A. in various courses across different departments and institutes. I've served as an adjunct faculty at the Departments of Mathematics, and Industrial Engineering at the ORT Braude College, as well as at the Dept. of Psychology (via the programming instruction unit) at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, at the Dept. of Statistics at the University of Haifa, and the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB), at the Karolinska Institute.

Occasionally, I provide statistical consultancy in academic and industrial projects.
